Frequently Asked Questions
According to Ayurveda, health is not merely considered to be a state of freedom from ailments or diseases, but rather a state of enjoying uninterrupted physical, mental and spiritual happiness and fulfilment. Ayurveda originated as a part of Vedic science. This is an integral spiritual science devised to give a comprehensive understanding of the entire Universe which it sees as working according to a single Universal Law. Vedic science includes Yoga, Meditation and Astrology and set forth Ayurveda as its branch for dealing with physical body and includes herbal medicines, dietetics, bodywork, surgery, psychology and spirituality.
The concept of pathogenesis in Ayurveda is basically different from the modern medical science. Ayurveda defines health as the state in which the Dhatus are in equilibrium and if this balance is disturbed disease is caused. Therefore the prevention of vitiation of the Doshas (3 biological forces) is the first step in prevention of diseases whether exogenous, endogenous or mental in nature. Natural immunity is always available to us if we eat according to our Prakruti.
In Modern medicine more attention is paid to correct the afflicted part of the body. But in Ayurveda while treating a disease, the individual as a whole is taken into consideration. Not only the condition of other parts of their body, the condition of their mind and soul are also taken into account while treating. So once the root of the disease is cured, chances of recurrence of the disease are rare.
Ayurveda diagnostic procedures are two pronged, the first is aimed at establishing the state and type of pathology with examination of the person the second is to decide the mode of treatment to be applied based on the strength and physical status of the individual.
Drugs of modern medicines, except vitamins and minerals are meant only for the patients. But, all Ayurvedic medicines and massages can be used simultaneously both by the patients as well as healthy people. In patients they cure the diseases and in healthy individuals they produce immunity against diseases and thereby preserve health. Remember, we are Sovereign over our own health food is medicine and medicine is food so when when diet is wrong medicine is of no use and when diet is correct medicine is of no need.
Depending on the type of disease, a person can expect to see positive changes sometimes within days but expect longer for chronic illnesses that may be long standing and situated within the deeper middle channels and organs of the body. The question that one must ask themselves here is “Am I looking for a Quick Fix” by suppression or masking of my symptoms or “Am I seeking to find the deep rooted cause of my imbalance and address it and rejuvenate my body naturally”.
If is is a “Quick Fix” you are looking for or “Quick Suppression” then Ayurveda may not be the right place for you but if you are looking to get to the bottom of your imbalance then Ayurveda can, within a relatively short time, begin to offer some benefit. So basically, if the disease is a newly formed dis-order and is a single dosha issue with tissue involvement then Ayurveda can balance this condition relatively quickly. On the other hand if the condition is formed with the aggravation of more than one or two doshas and if more organs and channels are involved or it has become chronic then any treatment will take longer to restore the imbalance.
One of the greatest advantages of Ayurveda is that there are absolutely no side effects of the treatment. The dietary guidelines and exercises are designed in such a way that any average person can follow them without any major disruption to their lifestyle. The diet will always be advised according to the persons constitution and type of disease. Emphasis is placed on making the treatment easy to follow because that in turn ensures greater patient commitment.
Remembering that all Ayurvedic medicine is plant based, each oil is made specifically for your own Prakruti (your body type). Ayurveda sets much higher standards than “acceptable’ levels of Government regulations. This is because Ayurveda’s basic view on health, and its concept of “Natural” is much more encompassing and refined. Also having ‘tested’ its theories for 6000 years directly on human beings, Ayurveda can justifiably claim to know the long term effects of all its treatments and products.
Although we get most of our nutrition orally, the skin (the largest organ) ingests nutrients as well. Unlike the food we chew and swallow which needs to be properly digested and absorbed, oils by-pass this digestive process and go full strength into the blood stream. So along with Oral ingestion of food and medicine, with Ayurveda even the skin is used for absorption of the oil or medicine.
We always encourage you to make a telephone call and speak to us first just to make sure that Ayurveda is going to be suitable for you and that we are able to help with your condition or requirement.
Once booked in, during a the Consultation firstly you will be asked a range of questions about you. To confirm your constitution your pulse will be checked and we will also look at your tongue. An assessment of any symptoms, family history and patterns of illness will be discussed. We will talk about your current state of health and your emotional well being as well as your state of mind as current indications of your health. Once aware of your constitution we will discuss your diet and lifestyle and offer guidelines on the correct diet and type of food within a quality that you can afford along with any herbs or supplements that may be of benefit to you.
To get the full benefit of your massage treatment we advise that is best not to eat before hand as the medicated oils won’t absorb as well into the body. However, if you are quite hungry and have to eat then do try and have a snack instead or something light so won’t suffer from a grumbly stomach during any massage treatment.
With any of the massage treatments you will be massaged with special herbs and oils, so please don’t wear make-up, perfume, heavy aftershave, or strongly scented lotions that might affect the treatment by interfering with the absorption of the medicinal oils into the skin.
Ayurveda, when incorporated into ones lifestyle will have a positive effect on the person holistically through nourishing their whole Body, Mind and Soul. The healthy response allows the person to feel more in balance within themselves. A person of healthy Body (physiologically) and Mind (psychologically) allows a more natural state of their being thus allowing them to become more “Connected” and closer to their “Spirit”.
To “Awaken” or what some people call “to wake up” is opening up your interior self which can also be practised though Ayurveda’s “Sister Science” Yoga. When one is ready they will finally be able to slip into Silentness, Stillness, and Aloneness (but not loneliness) allowing you to find an empty inner space you never knew existed where there is no background noise or buzz of human activity, no meetings, gossip, facebook, no e-mails, texts, no grumbling, no decisions and no interference where you are inside yourself. You are now faced with your Alone-ness.
In this place of being you will begin to slip into a more slower physical, mental and emotional state. Your body calms down and your thoughts blend into more thoughts. Slowly, this is where deep seated feelings and emotions arise, some will be happy, some may be sorrowful and your mind starts to think differently. What you do with these feelings and emotions is up to you as they are yours alone, you can choose to attach with them or let them go out of your life. In this new state of “Consciousness” is an awareness where you become the “Observer” where you begin to also observe your “Self” allowing you to give full undivided attention to your “Spirit”. By reaching here you are opening your door to God.
