Ayurveda is made up of two words Ayur and Veda. Ayuh means life and Veda means knowledge or science. So “Ayurveda’ in its completeness means “Science of life”. Ayurveda encapsulates all aspects of life whether it be physical, psychological, spiritual or social. What is beneficial to life or also harmful and what is happy life and what is sorrowful life, what is auspicious or inauspicious for longevity, as well as the measure of life (life span) itself. Ayurveda is the oldest documented medicine with written Vedic documents dating back more than 2000 years before Christ. Ayurveda believes the existence of the soul before birth and after death. Ayurveda is eternal, because it has no beginning, no end and is very vast and everlasting.
Ayurveda believes that the human body is a part of the universe and just like this Universe all living and non living things are made up of five basic elements which are Prithvi (Earth), Jala (Water), Agni (Fire), Vayu (Air) and Aakash (Ether) together these are called the “PanchaMahabhutas”. The human body is made up of the Doshas, Dhatus (7 structural tissues) and Malas (waste products). The Doshas, Vata, Pitha and Kapha are known as Tridoshas and are physiological entities of the body responsible for carrying out all the functions of the body. Dhatus are the structural entities of the body which are Rasa (plasma), Rakta (blood cells), Mamsa (muscle tissue), Meda (fat or lipid tissue), Asthi (bone tissue), maja (bone marrow) and shukra (hormonal, reproduction and other genital secretions). The Agni (metabolic fire) is in thirteen different forms and its job is to carry out the whole metabolism of the body. The waste products of the body which are extractable products are produced in the body as a by-product of metabolism and are known as the Malas and include pureesh (faeces), Sweda (sweat) and Mutra (urine). All the bio-transformations in the body occur through the Srotas (body channels) which are all sites for action of Agni (metabolic fire).

According to Ayurveda, health is not merely considered to be a state of freedom from ailments or diseases, but rather a state of enjoying uninterrupted physical, mental and spiritual happiness and fulfilment. Ayurveda originated as a part of Vedic science. This is an integral spiritual science devised to give a comprehensive understanding of the entire Universe which it sees as working according to a single Universal Law. Vedic science includes Yoga, Meditation and Astrology and set forth Ayurveda as its branch for dealing with physical body and includes herbal medicines, dietetics, bodywork, surgery, psychology and spirituality.

The concept of pathogenesis in Ayurveda is basically different from the modern medical science. Ayurveda defines health as the state in which the Dhatus are in equilibrium and if this balance is disturbed disease is caused. Therefore the prevention of vitiation of the Doshas (3 biological forces) is the first step in prevention of diseases whether exogenous, endogenous or mental in nature. Natural immunity is always available to us if we eat according to our Prakruti.

In Modern medicine more attention is paid to correct the afflicted part of the body. But in Ayurveda while treating a disease, the individual as a whole is taken into consideration. Not only the condition of other parts of their body, the condition of their mind and soul are also taken into account while treating. So once the root of the disease is cured, chances of recurrence of the disease are rare.

Ayurveda diagnostic procedures are two pronged, the first is aimed at establishing the state and type of pathology with examination of the person the second is to decide the mode of treatment to be applied based on the strength and physical status of the individual. The former and make different investigations to diagnose the disease.

Drugs of modern medicines, except vitamins and minerals are meant only for the patients. But, all Ayurvedic medicines and massages can be used simultaneously both by the patients as well as healthy people. In patients, they cure the diseases and in healthy individuals they produce immunity against diseases and thereby preserve health. Remember, we are Sovereign over our own health food is medicine and medicine is food so when when diet is wrong medicine is of no use and when diet is correct medicine is of no need.
