What Is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda, a Timeless Knowledge of Natural Health
Ayurveda translates to “Ayu” meaning Life or Longevity and “Veda” meaning Knowledge so “the Knowledge of Life or Wisdom of Life”. Ayurveda is the traditional holistic medical health system and curative medicine of India often referred to as the Mother of all Healing. Ayurveda treats imbalances holistically integrating mind, body and spirit in perfect harmony to achieve natural health and completeness unlike conventional Western medicine which merely treats the symptoms of a disease or illness. It is a natural healing system that originated more than 5,000 years ago and is the longest continually practised form of medicine on the planet.
Ayurveda is the knowledge that indicates what is good or bad for longevity, as well as the measure of life (life span) itself. According to Ayurveda, health is not merely considered to be a state of freedom from disease but rather a state of enjoying uninterrupted physical, mental and spiritual happiness through to fulfilment.
Understanding the language of nature allows us to balance the Body, Mind, and Spirit while providing tools and guidance to help maintain a balanced lifestyle. Ayurvedic practices restore holistic health, resulting in self-healing, vitality, and longevity. In Ayurveda, our Body, Mind, and Consciousness (spirit) work together in maintaining balance. Ayurveda provides specific knowledge and guidelines to help us in identifying our constitutional nature (who we are). Ayurveda focuses on removing the symptoms and eradicating the underlying root causes of disease. This is where true healing begins. This lifestyle approach enables us to live in harmony on earth fulfilling our own well being. Only then can we fulfil our true nature and purpose.
Your Constitution and Its Inner Balance
According to Ayurveda, every individual has a unique constitution known as “Prakruti.” It combines the three fundamental energies, Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, which govern various bodily functions. Understanding your body is critical to creating a personalised treatment plan that can restore your inner balance. Your Constitution is the degree to which the elements of Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Ether interact with one another. The ratio of these elements within your constitution are totally unique to you. These are your fingerprints and your DNA. Your constitution determines who you are, your individuality and your uniqueness. It provides a blueprint outlining your innate natural tendencies which shows your functional habits of your body as determined by your genetics. It reveals your hidden potential as well as your challenges and lessons and your gift so your body, mind and personality are a direct reflection of your constitution!
As your constitution is genetically determined at the time and place of conception, the three doshas fluctuate in accordance with your lifestyle. This altered state of the dosha is called “Vikruti” and indicates that the Doshas have deviated from their natural state of balance, resulting in imbalance which is what contributes to the disease process. By bringing the Doshas back into balance can prevent or alleviate any disease.
Three Principle Energies of the Body
- Vata: Vata is associated with the elements of air and space. It governs movements, including circulation, respiration, and nerve impulses. When in balance, Vata promotes creativity, vitality, and flexibility. However, an imbalance can lead to anxiety, digestive problems, and insomnia.
- Pitta: Pitta is characterised by fire and water. It governs metabolism, digestion, and transformation in the body. When Pitta is balanced, it supports strong digestion, clear thinking, and a vibrant complexion. Imbalances can manifest as irritability, inflammation, and digestive disorders.
- Kapha: Kapha is associated with the elements of earth and water. It provides structure, stability, and lubrication to the body. It promotes strength, peace, and emotional calmness. Imbalances may result in weight gain, sluggishness, and respiratory issues.

The Treatment
Ayurveda is vast medical system and incredibly sophisticated in observation and categorizes each person by their distinctive anatomic and metabolic “types.” The treatment plan and remedies are determined in part by each client’s constitution. There are many factors that can disturb the balance of the body such as unhealthy diet, stress, toxins, work, strained relationship and lifestyle choices. These disturbances are expressed in the body as disease.
The importance of proper digestion is of utmost importance to our health and in Ayurveda the poor function of our digestive system is understood as the root of all disease. This is true of all Eastern Medicine traditions and which the West is slowly, slowly starting to realise. Ayurveda offers ageless wisdom with regard to the diet and promotes universal laws that can be applied to our local foods, herbs, illnesses and prevention of disease. The world is filled with various medical conditions with people suffering on a regular basis with so many conditions for which there is nothing that can be done according to Allopathic science but for people with such conditions Ayurveda is a Godsend.
Ayurvedic medicines have centuries of traditional experience and the great thing about Ayurveda is that its techniques always yield side benefits not side effects! Drugs of modern medicines (excluding vitamins and minerals) are meant only for the patient but all Ayurvedic medicines and massages can be used simultaneously both by the patients as well as healthy people. In patients, they cure the disease and in healthy individuals they produce immunity against diseases thereby preserving health. The aim of Ayurveda is to harmonise our current state (vikruti) with our original state (prakruti) and his is done through the use of diet, lifestyle, massage using medicated oils, treatments and organic herbs.
So depending on the need of the patient we use an 8 fold or 10 fold method of diagnosis. Firstly, we determining a person’s constitution and to do this we use pulse diagnosis (Nadi) and tongue diagnosis (Jiwha) as well as an assessment of any symptoms, family history and patterns of illness. Current health state and emotional well being as well as mental state are also taken into account as current indications of health. Due to our constitution we are prone to certain types of health problems and illnesses. Ayurveda will focus on the health of the patient rather than on the disorder or disease so the aim is about bringing the patient back to their optimal health and maintaining it. This is done by treating the root cause of the disease rather than just the symptoms. With new clients, we start with a consultation to determine your constitution and choose the best possible diet and food within a quality that you can afford along with any herbs and activities that may be appropriate to you. We advise on certain types of treatments using medicated organic oils specific to your body type which will help re-balance your constitution. In each of the treatments specific organic oils are used dependent on our constitution. Additional Ayurvedic advice and treatment will be offered in the form of knowledge and age old wisdom for daily and seasonal routines, nutrition, exercise and proper use of our senses along with medicinal herbal remedies and practices of detoxification like Panchakarma and rejuvenation
